PENELOPE’S FIRST BIRTHDAY

It was Penelope’s first birthday last week. March 23, to be exact. So naturally, we had to throw her a little puppy party complete with a puppy birthday cake and a Guinness chocolate one for the two-legged guests. There were also puppy cupcakes to take home as party favors and, of course, a little photobooth. Thanks everyone for coming out to celebrate our baby’s first year (and sorry for the little extra excitement that was certainly not planned).

^^The cake and cupcakes for the pups were from AnnaBee’s in Pacifica, and Brendan convinced Miss P to have the Guinness chocolate cake, as well — recipe here.^^

Penelope, you are the sweetest little thing. I love that there isn’t an ounce of mean in you (even if you have a ton of naughty to make up for it). You let your sister win at everything in return for getting to bite her heels. Fetch and frisbee may not be your game, but I hope you never lose your eagerness on jogs and that your tail never learns to stop wagging. Here’s to year two and the hope that you learn a better recall and that you think twice before approaching the wrong dogs. We love you very, very much!

SKIRT SEASON

This spring, it’s all about skirts. Long, short, full, pleated β€” everything, anything, all of the above. I’ve never been big on skirts. I can’t tell you exactly why except that I’m either in the mood for jeans or a dress (or shorts if it’s warm and casual). And perhaps the skirt reminds me of my prep school, uniform days. But with the flowers blooming, I can’t help but be drawn to the girlish shapes.

I found this little pleated number at Zara. It pairs well with crop tops (another big trend this year) and wears a little high so you’re not flashing your tummy. It’s already sold out, but there are tons more options for a little spring fun. There’s certainly a little something for everyone.

PFEIFFER BEACH

While we were in Big Sur, we checked out Pfeiffer Beach, one of the only dog-friendly beaches (on leash) in the area. It was tricky to find. The turn off looks like a private road and it’s a super sharp right coming from the north. Then it’s basically a one-lane road for two miles before the state park entrance. $5 at the gate will get you into the small parking area. On this sunny Sunday, the lot filled up before it was noon.

The beach felt a lot like Cannon Beach in Oregon — but a fraction of the size. The views were stunning and the small creek was a fun chance for the girls to splish splash around. But next time, we’ll choose a non-weekend to visit to enjoy the beach in a less hectic state.

^^After an hour at the beach, we hit the road again to head south to the iconic waterfall. Along the way, Brendan kept saying we should pull over at a turnout to take in the views. And right as we pulled over, we both spotted some water spray out in the ocean. We scrambled out of the car to investigate. And sure enough, there were a couple whales migrating north with their babies. They didn’t breach while we watched, but it was neat to see them spray and play.^^

^^There was another pod near the whales that we thought were dolphins. But it’s hard to tell if they were dolphins or more baby whales.^^

^^And the waterfall that I’ve wanted to see since we moved up north. A little underwhelming after seeing the big falls at Kauai this past November following one of the biggest storms in recent history. But it was still a stunner. There wasn’t a clear path down to the beach. I wonder if there’s a way to paddleboard onto the sand from around the corner. I’d sure like to stand under that fall one of these days.^^

BIG SUR REDWOODS

A highlight from our weekend getaway was hiking the Pine Ridge Trail in Big Sur. It’s a dog-friendly one and meanders through giant redwoods, eventually ending at the Sykes Hot Springs. We only made it in a couple of miles, but maybe next time we’ll try the full 20 mile loop.

It was Penelope’s first time on a hike. She made us nervous by dancing alongside the edges with steep drops to her side. She can be so naive. The first couple hours on the trail are a climb so it’s best to give it a try in earlier part of the day. There are many redwood beauties but there are also long stretches without shade. And remember to pay the $5/day parking in the lot before your journey. Happy trails and tails.

SPRING FORWARD

NorCal weather today (and the past few, too) is decidedly beautiful. It’s all sunshine with barely a sign of fog. I know I’m jinxing it. But I hope that I am. We need more rain or we’re in for a brutal summer. Until that rain comes, I’m dressing for spring in prints and layers.
